Pillars Menorah

Artist Gabriel Bass originally designed and produced this winning entry for the Menorah Competition at the Philadelphia Jewish Art Museum near the beginning of his career. The menorah was later purchased by the Katzen Museum of Art at The American University in Washington DC, where it is part of the museum’s permanent collection. The impressive Hanukkah menorah stands to chest height and four inches deep. It was carved completely by hand from old-growth yellow cedar, using carving tools and techniques Gabriel learned as an apprentice to totem pole carvers in British Columbia in the late nineteen-nineties.
